Connect South Commences! /
18 Feb 2019
Marking the commencement of the construction phase for the Connect South project, a traditional Smoking Ceremony was held on the South Perth Foreshore signifying a cleanse and purification of the area for a new beginning. This marks a major milestone for this significant urban City project!
The Smoking Ceremony is a Noongar ritual that also represents a cleanse of the spirit, body and soul whilst you are on Noongar Country and wards off warra wirrin (bad spirits) whilst bringing blessings of the kwop wirrin (good spirits).
The Connect South project is all about creating a positive environment, both economically and socially to support the growth of the South Perth Peninsula and greater region, with completion anticipated for November 2019. As Project Managers, NS Group is pleased to see the whole team’s vison through the stakeholder consultations and design stages be realised as construction commences.
Connect South is a major undertaking that will enhance and invigorate Mends Street and the iconic foreshore area in South Perth. The project will create a new community heart as well as a tourism destination. Providing a range of unique day and night time amenities for residents, local businesses and visitors, it will also fulfil the City’s vision of a revitalised foreshore with high quality spaces to host civic and civil ceremonies. Incorporated into the design are three key themes; ‘Perth Zoo’, ‘A Garden Suburb’ and ‘Public Transport’ all identified through extensive public consultation as key to defining the character.
“Connect South is set to create a civic space that recognises the unique character and history of the area whist developing a contemporary urban heart. It will create new spaces for the community and connect important destinations within the Mends Street precinct with improved access to transport, improved public amenity and greater economic opportunity.” City of South Perth Mayor, Sue Doherty.
NS Group initially provided stakeholder consultation and advisory services to the project, helping the City to secure National Stronger Regions Funding and progressing the development of the Master Plan and implementation of the delivery strategy. NS Group’s role continued through to provision of Project Management and Superintendency services for the master-planning, consultation, design and delivery stages of this exciting project.
